Are you considering running a business from your home? If you are, being your own boss is awesome, but don’t make the same mistakes I did. I’m going to confess all my design mistakes to help you in designing a home office.

When I was designing a my office I took a total of two hours to design because it was a helter-skelter, haphazard arrangement. I was full of hope for the growth of my business, but I didn’t realize it all begins with a suitable office design, which it wasn’t.

First, get a good look at the actual space. If you plan on hiring staff or running a one person operation, you still need to be conscious of how you function within your space. Serious young entrepreneurs need their home offices to reflect their goals.

I should’ve done some design homework before setting up a completely dysfunctional home office. Designing a home office with Feng Shui is a little complicated, but a very cool and practical approach to design. For optimal Feng Shui harmony, if you’re interior allows for a separate entry to your office, go with it. A clear separation between work and home should be your first choice.

Think of health, well-being and productivity for color palettes. Creamy yellows and soft whites are popular choices because they’re motivating colors, but not distracting or disruptive. Poor lighting and air quality will affect the quality of your work. Ample natural lighting and an open window feeds your brain! Full spectrum lights and air purifying plants can help beef up your lighting and air quality.

How can you work not knowing what’s behind you? Never position your desk with your back to a door. If you have to face a wall, make it disappear with a huge painting that accents your home office design, but also makes you smile. Computer Desk sizes vary from a small 30″ H x 42″ W x 24″ D with just one drawer to a larger contemporary design of 31″ H x 66″ W x 32″ D with more surface space and drawers for additional storage.

Consider wireless technology for your computer or laptop when designing a home office. A sleek contemporary desk with entrails of cords and wires hanging off it and spilling into a mess on the floor is unattractive and unpleasant.

Your home office design can be in a larger 200 square feet or small 70 square feet, whatever the size; use all of it to avoid quickly outgrowing it. If your space is tight, build up. Use all the empty wall space available for shelving things you need.  It will also take things off the floor and give you the feeling of more space. It didn’t even occur to me I might need to have client meetings in my first home office design, so try to incorporate a client seating area if possible.
