This is one of my favorite tried-and-true tricks. When I know I have work to do and I have absolutely no motivation, I simply set up “blocks” of activity time in which to do it. As long as I know that there is some finishing point, it’s much easier to get the work done.

For example, if I need to return e-mails or phone calls, I give myself a time limit, maybe fifteen or twenty minutes, to dive into the activity. At the end of that block of time, I can just stop what I’m doing and save the rest for the next day, or if I have enough momentum going, I can just finish the entire list at that time. Getting started is the most difficult part of any task.

Once you get past that, the rest is a breeze. Blocks help you break down a job into bite-size chunks so you can dig right in without feeling so overwhelmed. If you have a stack of items to file, then set an activity block for yourself. Perhaps you can file ten items a day. This may seem small or somewhat insignificant, but you will be shocked at the progress that little “baby blocks” can provide.

You can get so much more accomplished than you would have ever imagined possible by just setting small goals for yourself and making sure you achieve them. We all know that moms have a lot to do, but not one ever said we had to do it in one fell swoop.
